Introduction
Remote sensing is applied in many fields including, among others, architecture, archaeology, medicine, industrial quality control, robotics and extraterrestrial mapping. This Module, however, focuses on Earth observation from airborne or spaceborne platforms.
This Unit gives a non-expert audience an introduction to remote sensing. Aerial photos and satellite imagery are introduced by explaining the technical process of obtaining images usable for participatory mapping. The focus is on satellite imagery although insights on aerial photography are provided as well. This Unit concludes by listing and commenting on some of the most common satellites (platforms) used as sources of remote sensing images and the characteristics of their imagery.
