Module 13 - Participatory Internet-based Mapping

Introduction

Internet-based mapping, which makes use of Web-based applications such as Google Maps and Google Earth, represents the newest area of participatory mapping. It has gained acceptance over the past few years in many parts of the world because of its widespread availability and uncomplicated user interface that offer great potential for facilitating and mediating the communication of land-related knowledge. The low cost of developing and implementing these Internet-based tools, which are often freely available, has further enhanced the relevance of these technologies to the practice of participatory mapping.

This Module explores the theoretical and practical components of using online mapping methods to document and present local spatial knowledge. It consists of three Units, which introduce the basics of Web-based mapping, provide tools for collecting, integrating and reviewing data, practise displaying and communicating local knowledge through online maps and discuss the risks and limitations associated with Web-based mapping.

Module objectives / expected outcomes

After the completion of the Module the trainee will be able to use the Internet to help communities define their relationship with the land; train community members in planning, developing and promoting Web-based mapping applications; use various GeoWeb applications to facilitate the creation of an online map; explain issues surrounding privacy and intellectual property associated with storing and communicating information through online maps.
